The nitrogen decade: mobilizing global action on nitrogen to 2030 and beyond

چکیده
Despite its relevance to most UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), nitrogen pollution still lacks broad visibility and coordinated global governance. A new goal “halve waste” by 2030 would save US$100 billion annually, contributing post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) economic recovery multiple SDGs. The scientific community is working with the coordinate accelerate necessary action. If every decade has character, it seems reasonable that 2020–2030 will be remembered as of coronavirus post-COVID-19 recovery. With a bigger impact on gross domestic product than 2008 financial crisis,1United NationsImpact COVID-19 pandemic trade development. Transitioning normal. It may look like reaching (SDGs) just become even harder. While you might think there already enough worry about, we add mix. As scientists embrace next big environmental challenge, say not another problem. Instead, see part solution plethora problems faced. Many are aware one transgressed “planetary boundaries.” What less widely understood also affects exceedance all other planetary boundaries. In low-energy state atmospheric di-nitrogen (N2), dominates Earth’s atmosphere. contrast, forms nitrogen—from ammonia (NH3), nitrate (NO3?), amino acids, proteins, DNA—can considered representing high-energy “reactive nitrogen” (Nr). Substantial energy needed create Nr—whether lightning, fertilizer manufacture, or biological fixation (BNF)—so that, collectively, Nr precious commodity. This means naturally tend revert N2, supplying soil bacteria, while producing gases along way, such nitric oxide (NO), dioxide (NO2), nitrous (N2O). متن کاملThe Global Nitrogen Cycle
The geobiology of nitrogen is dominated by large inert reservoirs and small biological fluxes. The largest reservoirs are nitrogen gas (in the atmosphere and dissolved in the ocean) and sedimentary nitrogen (sequestered in continental crust). Because most organisms cannot utilize gaseous nitrogen, we distinguish between fixed nitrogen compounds (which contain no N–N bonds) that are biologically...
متن کاملNitrogen: regional contributions to the global cycle
N itrogen is critical for life on Earth: it is an integral component of all amino acids, the basic constituents of protein. Although elemental nitrogen is abundant-the Earth's atmosphere is 79 percent nitrogen-the availability of nitrogen often limits the productivity of plant communities, whether natural vegetation or agricultural crops. This is because only certain forms of nitrogen are avail...

To address these challenges, the drought resistantlegume crop chickpea was compared with pea, barley and oat regarding its nitrogen(N) yield, protein yield and N use and utilization efficiency under Centr...
متن کاملEffects of manure nitrogen on vegetables’ yield and nitrogen efficiency in Tanzania
Due to an increasing demand of leaf vegetables, and hence their economic importance in the tropics, it is very common that excessive fertilizer N rates are applied to vegetable gardens and fields to attain high yield. This calls for more information on their nutrient requirements. In this study, we designed experiments to explore the effect of organic N levels on the yield and agronomic N use e...
